Here in Haywood County, we celebrate our Appalachian heritage! For the third year, Main Street in Downtown Waynesville will host the Appalachian Lifestyle Celebration on June 8, 2013 from 10am to 5pm. This heritage themed event encourages us to protect, preserve and develop our historical and cultural resources with demonstrations, entertainment and traditional crafts for sale.
Two stages will feature live entertainment throughout the day, and will have music lovers tapping their toes to the music of banjos, fiddles and dulcimers while clogging groups perform. One of the featured performers will be David Holt, a Grammy Award winner, musician, storyteller, historian, television host and entertainer. Holt plays 10 acoustic instruments and has released numerous recordings of traditional mountain music and southern folktales. Michael Reno Harrell, an award winning songwriter, veteran Appalachian Mountain storyteller and entertainer will also be featured.
Arts and crafts demonstrations will range from basket making to blacksmithing, quilting and weaving to wood working and carving, pottery to painting and soap making.
You’ll not go hungry, as a host of traditional foods will be sold including; barbecue, smoked sausage, beans, cornbread, fried apple pies, kettle corn, baked goods, nuts and much more.
Bob Plott will be there with a Plott Hound, the NC state dog, and will speak of frontier hunters and the items they used and how they were made. The nearby Shelton House Museum will present an educational Civil War Commemoration that weekend as well.
Don’t miss this celebration of our mountain heritage!
