The Blue Ridge Breakaway is an adrenaline pumping ride through county lanes, scenic byways and the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The ride begins at the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center.
Some of this group rode in the inaugural 2010 Breakaway, and were so impressed with how well the ride was organized; they rallied a few more friends who have also become big supporters. These veteran cyclists have participated in many other major organized rides and all agreed that none were any better than the Blue Ridge Breakaway.
With a variety of routes specifically designed for riders of all skill levels, the Blue Ridge Breakaway offers four routes, ranging in difficulty, elevation and length, consisting of:
Rabbit – 24 miles with a 1200 elevation gain
Panther – 40 miles with a 2600 elevation gain
Trout – 66 miles with a 3100 elevation gain
Hawk (or holy cow!) – 105 miles with a 9600 elevation gain
Some of our gentlemen actually choose to do the Hawk. Perhaps from past experience, they have booked two muscle magicians (AKA massage therapists) this year. The “Jennys” will be here and waiting as they stumbled back to the inn. Their magic hands will work out the kinks and they will again enjoy a great dinner at The Chef’s Table that evening.
A terrific group of folks! They kid (at least we think they’re kidding!) that their BRB rooms at Oak Hill will be covered in their wills and they are even discussing the development of bi-laws dictating room selections! Thanks, guys.
This post cannot close without mention of the loss of one of the Knoxville Breakaway Team’s valued members. RIP Dave. You will be missed.
