OUT AND ABOUT IN WAYNESVILLE - 2-9-13
Life certainly changes around here during the winter months. It takes on a much slower pace guest wise, but this is the time we get into some major projects and try to get out and about town to visit the great businesses here in Waynesville and see what’s new. We hope to accurately guide our guests as they explore our area…if they have a great time, they’ll come back! The past couple of weeks have been fairly consumed with web site adjustments and a major bookkeeping project (yuck!), but we were able to get out of the inn a few evenings to visit with the locals.
Tipping Point Brewery & Tavern
On those rare evenings that we don’t have guests in the inn and want to go out for a quick bite, the Tipping Point is a frequent destination. Although classically a tavern complete with multiple TVs set to the sports channels, it offers a comfortable atmosphere for anyone…singles, couples or families. They are brewing their own beer now and Shell enjoyed one of their Stouts. But, they also feature a really good “pub” menu. We have had other things, but usually go for the Mexican Pulled Pork Sandwich. We love it and it’s just easy (no decisions!). Occasional entertainment and special events such as “Beermageddeon” show that these folks are creative and cater to the locals. That’s probably why our out-of-town guests enjoy it too!
Frog Level Brewing
The most conveniently located to us is Frog Level Brewing, just a few minutes’ walk in Waynesville’s Lower Frog Level. Richland Creek used to be much larger and when the rain brought the water levels up, the abundant population of frogs could be seen hopping around all over the area. So…the brewery. It backs up to the creek with a lovely patio for use in the summer months. It’s a large place with a collection of different seating styles and enough room for two corn hole games. The evening we were there, they had a great band playing a lot of stuff from my era, which we really enjoyed. Be sure to note that there is no food to speak of. They don’t mind if you order something in or bring your own food, and they have a good relationship with a new BBQ place on Main Street, Blue Ridge BBQ.
Initially, they opened as Headwaters Brewing, but ran into a snag with the name and changed it to Bearwaters. They already used a bear in their logo and only had to change 2 letters in their name. They’re located in a warehouse behind the Sagebrush Restaurant off of Russ Avenue. It’s a very comfortable atmosphere and you’re greeted by Gypsy, their black lab. There was no entertainment when we visited, but it is frequently offered. Now for the best part…the beer…it’s awesome! Again, this is a brewery and has a very limited menu, basically hot dogs and such. But you can bring in your own food. A great place to hang out for great beer and entertainment.
You may know that Asheville NC has been “Beer Town USA” for the past couple of years (tied for first in 2012). But, watch out Beer Town…Waynesville is right on your heels!
