QUICK DRAW - April 28, 2012
One of Waynesville’s most popular art events, Quick Draw is the 11th annual benefit for the arts in Haywood County. Regional artists are challenged to create a finished piece, ready for sale, in under one hour. Artists then auction off their works. Some 40 artists will also display pieces in pottery, metal sculpture, woodworking, fiber art, acrylics, pastels, watercolor, fused glass, jewelry design and basketry at this year’s event.
One of our favorite local artists, Jo Ridge Kelley, will be competing again this year. Jo has been planning her oil canvas for the competition for some time now. Whatever the end product, it is sure to be magnificent! In addition to the actual live artists, there will also be demonstrations in jewelry, basketry, metal sculpture…and don’t miss Cathey Bolton’s colorful ceramics.
Proceeds from Quick Draw benefit art education in Haywood County public schools and award scholarships for graduation seniors allowing them to pursue are-related studies. Since 2002, Quick Draw has funded over 18,000 art experiences.
The event will be held at the Laurel Ridge Country Club on April 28th from 4:30PM to 9:30PM. Tickets are $50 in advance and are available on line or at local art galleries. A cocktail social begins at 4:30pm, and the Quick Draw challenge begins promptly at 5:00pm. The live auction will take place at 6:30pm, as guests bid on ready-to-hang art. Lucky winners take home a piece they can describe with enthusiasm and pride, as they actually watched it being created!
