Bess Haywood Ray was the 6th of 12 children born to Clyde and Ella Ray. She eventually married the son of Captain Howell of the confederate army who rode with Stonewall Jackson in the Civil War. After the death of her husband, Bess moved back into the family home to live out her days in Waynesville.
